How quickly can a person get arthritis?

Because a guy just walked into our office and said he “just came down with severe arthritis.” I thought that arthritis was more of a progression thing—not something that hits you one morning while you brush your teeth. Maybe I’m wrong, but this guy does tend to be a hypochondriac.
